OK y'all, pack it up, bend over and kiss your ass goodbye. It's a well-known fact that I'm not fan of the current administration, but this one has just gone too far. Seems that they've contracted with a company from the United Arab Emirates to do security for our ports including New York, New Jersey, Miami, Baltimore, Philly, and New Orleans. Condi says, "Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, said last week that it was “the considered opinion of the US Government that this (deal) can go forward”. She pledged to work with Congress because “perhaps people will need better explanation and will need to understand some of the process that we have gone through”. " I've heard other sources say things like, "but they're our allies and friends now." Let's list a few former friends: Sadam Hussein back when the Ayatollah was doing his crazy stuff in Iran; Osama bin Laden, back when the Afghanies were fighting the Russians; every terrorist/drug dealing thug in South America as long as they're fighting communists.
THE EMPORER HAS NO CLOTHES (or no brain, either, it seems)

The port deal demonstrates that the whole "war on terror" mantra by Bush is nothing but a smoke screen for his crowd's business interests. For the administration to say okay to such an obvious national security breach means somebody is making BIG money.
You guys are both 100% right but this will not happen. There is legislation proposed in Congress to block this deal and although Bush says he will veto any such legislation, they should be able to come up with enough votes to override the veto. Even some of Bush's loyal cronies in Congress are opposing this, especially in the House.
The private company from the UAE has not signed on with the US gov., the contract was bought from a British comany who is currently manageing some ports. It will be a hard thing to stop in a free enterprise system but if they can bug PETA's phones in the name of stopping terror, then surely get by without doing business with countries who have sponsered terrorism in the past.

I don't think we're going to die but I'll tell you what I thought when I heard of this- WTF??
To be fair, both Republicans and Democrats in Congress think this is a real bad idea.
This just does not make any sense whatsoever.
Wasn't this was supposed to be the foreign policy A team, people who supposedly knew what they were doing? I supported taking Saddam out. I still think we did the right thing. But I also think that starting with that ridiculous aircraft carrier stunt Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld etal have FUBAR'd the post combat phrase big time.
I also think Cheney is the real problem, that he holds way too much power, and he's made some very poor choices.
